Get Your License For Solo Paragliding
Are you ready to start your journey to become a full fledged paraglider? At the Tandem Flight Company, we offer you everything you need to get your Basic license, issued by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). We aim to make this training safe, fun, and easily accessible to anyone wanting to obtain the necessary license and training to fly on their own.
Course Outline & SACAA Requirements
The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has introduced strict safety requirements in order to obtain the Basic License. You will be required to attend theory lessons, pass an official exam, and finally complete roughly 35 flights or the equivalent of 4 hours of flying time.
This is done to ensure that you not only have the skills to fly on your own safely but also the confidence in your flying ability. To make this training as accessible as possible, we have split all of this into three distinct blocks that you can complete according to your eagerness and schedule.
The Basic Course
The first step to getting your Basic License will introduce you to all the skills you need to practice paragliding safely. First you get to enjoy some tandem flights with an instructor, followed by some training on the ground to learn how to do take-offs, turning and landing. The final step is your first solo flights, guided by an instructor through 2 way radio.

Theory & Exam
Once you have completed the Basic Course, it is time to dive into the theory lessons followed the official open book exam where you are required to achieve an 85% pass mark. At this stage we will also take you through the various options of buying or renting equipment.
Solo flying instruction & supervision
With the Basic Course completed and the SACAA exam passed, it is time to achieve the 4 hours of flight time required to get your license. During this time, you will receive further instruction on various practical requirements required for your license such as descent techniques, flying with other pilots etc. All in all, you have to achieve a minimum of 4 hours of flight time, which translates to approximately 35 flights. All previous flights completed during the Basic Course count towards this goal.
